Perhaps a thicker layer of cardboard and a deeper layer of organic would have kept a well-established dock root from emerging, but, from what I’ve read, it would hardly slow bindweed down. If you go back to the first photos, you can see brown remnants of the vine hanging from the chicken wire. I naively thought it was the annual vine wild buckwheat.
